Why Commercial Facilities Monitoring Matters

Legionella control and water system safety

Regular temperature checks help facilities teams stay ahead of potential risks in hot and cold-water systems. By keeping temperatures within safe ranges, buildings can support compliance and maintain safe operation across plant rooms, outlets and water storage systems.

HVAC performance optimisation

Accurate temperature monitoring is essential to keeping HVAC systems running efficiently. It supports commissioning, balancing and fault-finding, helping engineers maintain comfort levels while improving overall system performance.

Compliance & audit readiness

Reliable temperature records make it easier to demonstrate due diligence and meet facilities management compliance requirements. This helps simplify audits and routine inspections.

Reduce downtime & costs

Identifying issues early helps prevent unexpected breakdowns and reduces reactive maintenance. This keeps systems running more smoothly and helps avoid unnecessary disruption across commercial environments.

Energy & multi-site efficiency

Ongoing temperature monitoring provides facilities teams with better visibility into building performance. Across multiple sites, this helps identify inefficiencies, reduce energy waste and maintain consistent standards from a central point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is accurate temperature measurement important for Legionella control?

Accurate temperature readings are essential for demonstrating compliance and reducing risk. Reliable thermometers help identify system issues early, such as poor circulation or failing hot water systems, before they become a hazard.

What equipment is used for Legionella temperature monitoring?

Digital thermometers — Robust and calibrated industrial thermometers. Waterproof and Bluetooth-enabled options streamline checks.

Probes — Surface probes for pipes and tanks, immersion probes for running water, and wire probes for hard-to-reach areas.

Timer — Ensure cold running water reaches ≤20 °C within 2 minutes, and hot water reaches ≥50 °C within 1 minute.

What humidity should a room be?

For most homes and indoor spaces, the ideal humidity level is around 40–60 %RH. This range keeps conditions comfortable and helps reduce the risk of damp, mould, and dry air issues.

Learn how to increase or decrease humidity in a room in our humidity guide.

Can I get a wireless humidity sensor for remote monitoring?

Yes, the ETI ThermaData WiFi Humidity Logger lets you monitor room temperature and humidity remotely and receive digital alerts when readings fall outside your set limits.

The device measures the environment at timed intervals, sending readings to your computer via WiFi. It’s compatible with either the free ThermaData Hub software or the subscription-based ETI Cloud software.

Which thermometer is best for measuring surfaces?

The best thermometer for surfaces is a thermocouple thermometer, such as the Therma 1, Therma 3, Therma Elite or Therma Waterproof, plus a surface probe.

We offer a wide range of surface probes to suit the surface you’re measuring, including pipe probes, grill probes, and magnetic probes.

Infrared thermometers are less accurate than surface probes but are good for quick measurements of very hot or hard-to-reach areas.

What can wireless sensors be used for?

WiFi temperature sensors are designed to be set in place and left to monitor the temperature at programmed intervals. Therefore, they’re best used for room and storage temperatures or humidity.

Common applications include:
• Fridges and freezers
• Food processing, restaurants and supermarkets
• Medical and pharmaceutical applications
• Museums, art galleries and archives
• Zoos and breeding programmes
• Agriculture, livestock and horticulture

What are the benefits of wireless temperature monitoring?

• Accurate temperature readings automatically taken on time
• View and manage data remotely from anywhere in the world
• Avoid costly damage with real-time alerts for out-of-range readings
• Validate historical data quickly with an accessible digital archive
• Save time and money on manual labour
• Protect your reputation with a robust and reliable system
