Therma 1 legionella thermometer

The legionnaires' test kit includes a robust, easy-to-use Therma water temperature thermometer. Featuring a wide temperature range of -100 to 1370 °C, the Therma 1 legionnaires' thermometer is compatible with any of our type K thermocouple probes.

The Therma 1 has a minimum of five years of battery life and features an auto power-off function to reduce battery usage. In addition, the hold function makes recording temperatures easy.

Complete legionella testing kit

The premium legionnaires' test kit features three different probes for testing various water system elements. The Penetration Temperature Probe can be used to record tap water temperatures, the Ribbon Surface Temperature Probe for pipe surfaces and tanks and the Wire Probe is ideal for hard-to-reach areas.

The kit also comes with a FREE Water-Resistant Countdown Timer to ensure tests are conducted for the correct amount of time. The mini tub of Probe Wipes makes probes easy to wipe clean. The legionella testing kit comes safely stored inside an ABS carrying case, making it easy to transport everything you need to different water outlets.

A FREE traceable calibration certificate is also included so that you can be confident in the accuracy of your tests.

How to test for legionella risks in water?

Incorrect water temperature is a key risk factor for Legionella growth. The Legionella bacteria multiply in water at temperatures between 20 to 45 °C, particularly if a supply of nutrients is present, such as scale, rust, sludge or algae.

A typical method of control is to store cold water below 20 °C. Hot water should be stored above 60 °C and distributed at above 50 °C. Regular testing using a water temperature thermometer helps control legionella risks.

Who needs to check water temperatures for legionella risks?

Current legislation means that you must organise a risk assessment if you are an employer or person in control of premises. The revised Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) issued by the Government's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) significantly extends the scope of its guidance on controlling legionella bacteria in water.

The code now applies to all workplace hot and cold water systems regardless of their capacity; the lower limit of 300 litres previously used to exclude domestic systems no longer applies. Whilst domestic systems may represent a risk, the code only applies to risk arising from work activity.

This means all employers managing premises with hot/cold water systems or wet cooling systems are legally responsible for identifying contamination risks and preventing or controlling them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the Premium Legionnaires' Thermometer Kit?

This kit is designed to pride everything a facility manager or landlord would need for water safety testing. Inside the hard ABS carrying case, you will find the Therma 1 digital thermometer, three distinct temperature probes, a water-resistant countdown timer, and a box of 100 single-sachet probe wipes. It also comes with a free traceable calibration certificate to support your compliance records.

Why does the Premium Legionella Kit have three different probes?

Different parts of a water system need specific tools to get a true reading. The Premium Kit includes a penetration probe to measure running tap water, a precision ribbon surface probe to test the outside of hot and cold pipes, and a flexible PFA wire probe to check temperatures in tight or awkward spaces.

How long do I need to run water before testing for Legionella?

The Approved Code of Practice (ACoP L8) states that you must let hot water run for one minute, and cold water for two minutes, before recording the temperature. To make this simple, the Premium Kit includes a free water-resistant countdown timer. This ensures your flush tests are timed perfectly every time, giving you exact results for your risk assessments.

What are the safe water temperatures to stop Legionella growing?

To stop Legionella bacteria from spreading, you must keep cold water below 20 °C. Hot water needs to be stored at 60 °C or higher. When it comes out of the tap, hot water should be at least 50 °C (or 55 °C in healthcare buildings). The bacteria grow very fast in still water between 20 °C and 45 °C, which is why checking your temperatures regularly is so important.

How regularly do I need to check my water temperatures?

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) says you must check your water often to follow the rules. Usually, you should test your hot and cold taps once a month. Hot water needs to reach 50 °C within one minute of turning on the tap. Cold water must drop below 20 °C within two minutes. Places with vulnerable people, like hospitals or care homes, must do daily checks on their main water outlets.

Who is legally responsible for Legionella temperature monitoring?

The Approved Code of Practice (ACoP L8) applies to all workplace hot and cold water systems, regardless of their capacity. Any employer, landlord, or facility manager overseeing premises with hot or cold water systems is legally responsible for identifying contamination risks and implementing a reliable temperature monitoring programme to control them.
