Waterproof Legionnaires' Thermometer Kit or Legionella thermometer kit with IP66/67 Therma Waterproof thermometer.

This Waterproof Legionella testing thermometer kit can be used to monitor the temperature of both standing water and the surface of pipes and tanks that form part of the water system. The penetration probe can also be used to test the temperature of tap water.

The immersion probe should be placed in the water to a minimum depth of 25 mm; the ribbon surface probe may be used to take the temperature of pipes and tanks, and the wire probe can be used to reach awkward places or where the other probes are not appropriate. This kit comes with a traceable certificate of calibration.

Incorrect water temperature is a key risk factor for Legionella growth. Legionella bacteria multiply in water at temperatures between 20 to 45 °C, particularly if a supply of nutrients is present, such as scale, rust, sludge or algae. A typical method of control is to store cold water below 20 °C. Hot water should be stored above 60°C and distributed at above 50°C.

Current legislation means that if you are the employer or person in control of premises, you must organise a risk assessment. The revised Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) issued by the Government's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) significantly extends the scope of its guidance on the control of legionella bacteria in water.

The code now applies to all hot and cold water systems in the workplace, regardless of their capacity, i.e. the lower limit of 300 litres previously used to exclude domestic systems no longer applies. Whilst domestic systems may represent a risk, the code only applies to risks arising from a work activity.

This means that all employers who manage premises with hot/cold water systems and/or a wet cooling system have a legal responsibility to identify any risk of contamination and to prevent or control it.

LEGAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR TESTING FOR LEGIONELLA

If you are the employer or person in control of premises, you must organise a risk assessment from exposure to legionella. The revised Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) Legionnaires' disease: Control of Legionella Bacteria in water systems (L8) issued by the Government's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) significantly extends the scope of its guidance on control of legionella bacteria in water. The code applies to all hot and cold water systems in the workplace, regardless of their capacity, i.e. the lower limit of 300 litres previously used to exclude domestic systems no longer applies. Whilst domestic systems may represent a risk, the code only applies to a risk arising from a work activity, but does include domestic landlords who have a duty to keep their tenants safe from health hazards. This means that all employers and landlords who manage premises with hot/cold water systems and/or wet cooling systems have a legal responsibility to identify any risk of contamination and to prevent or control it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which probes are included in the ETI Waterproof Legionella Kit?

This kit provides three different sensors to handle ACoP L8 testing requirements. You receive a waterproof penetration probe for testing standing water (which must be immersed to a minimum depth of 25 mm), a precision ribbon surface probe to accurately check external pipework, and a highly flexible PFA wire probe for measuring temperatures in awkward or hard-to-reach areas.

Is this kit suitable for ACoP L8 compliance?

Yes, it is designed specifically to help landlords, employers, and facility managers meet the ACoP L8 guidelines. The law requires accurate and regular temperature monitoring of hot and cold water systems to prevent Legionella bacteria from growing. The digital time-stamping feature on the Bluetooth thermometer provides reliable proof that you are carrying out your required safety checks.

How regularly do I need to check my water temperatures?

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) says you must check your water often to follow the rules. Usually, you should test your hot and cold taps once a month. Hot water needs to reach 50 °C within one minute of turning on the tap. Cold water must drop below 20 °C within two minutes. Places with vulnerable people, like hospitals or care homes, must do daily checks on their main water outlets.

What are the safe water temperatures to stop Legionella growing?

To stop Legionella bacteria from spreading, you must keep cold water below 20 °C. Hot water needs to be stored at 60 °C or higher. When it comes out of the tap, hot water should be at least 50 °C (or 55 °C in healthcare buildings). The bacteria grow very fast in still water between 20 °C and 45 °C, which is why checking your temperatures regularly is so important.

Who is legally responsible for Legionella temperature monitoring?

The Approved Code of Practice (ACoP L8) applies to all workplace hot and cold water systems, regardless of their capacity. Any employer, landlord, or facility manager overseeing premises with hot or cold water systems is legally responsible for identifying contamination risks and implementing a reliable temperature monitoring programme to control them.
