What is the difference between a thermocouple, thermistor, and RTD probe?

Thermocouples offer the widest temperature range and fastest response. Thermistors provide excellent accuracy for food and everyday applications. RTD/PT100 probes deliver the highest accuracy and long-term stability for laboratory, calibration, and critical process measurements.

How do I recalibrate my thermometers and probes?

You can send your equipment to ETI’s UKAS calibration laboratory for accredited recalibration. We will return your instruments to you within their specified accuracy range and with a new calibration certificate.

Can I use the same probe for different applications?

Some probes are versatile enough for multiple uses, but specialist probes often provide more accurate and reliable results. For example, a surface probe is better suited to measuring hot plates than a standard immersion probe.

What probe do I need for food temperature measurements?

For food safety checks, penetration or immersion probes are the most common choice. Thermistor probes are particularly popular because of their high accuracy in food temperature ranges.

How do I choose the right temperature probe?

Start with the sensor type, as this defines performance.

  • Thermocouple – fast, wide temperature range, robust. Ideal for general industrial and food applications.
  • Thermistor – very fast and highly accurate, but over a narrower range. Common in food and laboratory use.
  • RTD (Pt100 / Pt1000) – highest accuracy and stability. Best for precision measurement and calibration environments.

Once you have chosen your sensor type, select the probe style based on the application:

  • Penetration for solids and food products
  • Immersion for liquids
  • Air probes for ambient monitoring
  • Surface probes for plates, grills and equipment

Then consider response time, durability, and whether certification or calibration is required for compliance.
