Since 1992, every Thermapen has been designed and manufactured by Electronic Temperature Instruments (ETI) in Worthing, West Sussex. While our thermometers are trusted in a range of industries around the world, the production of Thermapen has remained rooted in Britain.

Thermapen thermometers are designed and made by Electronic Temperature Instruments Ltd (ETI) in Worthing, West Sussex, ETI has been making thermometers and other measurement instruments for food and industrial professionals since 1983.
Thermapen is ETI’s flagship product. Since its creation in 1992, it has become the thermometer of choice for professional chefs and home cooks around the world.
Why are Thermapens made in the UK?
We make Thermapens in-house at our Worthing factories because we are passionate about British craftsmanship. It also gives us full control over the quality of our thermometers, from concept and creation through to testing and calibration. 
How are Thermapens made?
1. Research and development
Our R&D team design new Thermapen models based on customer research, ensuring they meet the requirements of professionals and hobbyists alike.
2. Part sourcing
Every element of each Thermapen model is carefully chosen for its quality to ensure lasting results. We source parts from local suppliers where possible — Thermapen cases are moulded by a company right next door to ours.
3. Hand assembly
Thermapens are carefully put together by trained professionals. Our team have decades of experience building Thermapens.
4. Quality tests
Quality checks at every stage of building (13 in total) ensure that every Thermapen meets its high-accuracy specification and withstands frequent, long-term use in commercial environments.
We have a UKAS-accredited in-house laboratory, enabling us to certify calibration and provide certification with every Thermapen.
Thermapen history
1983 - ETI was founded
Peter and Miriam Webb founded Electronic Temperature Instruments Ltd (ETI).
1992 - The first Thermapen launched
Before 1992, professional food thermometers featured an electronic unit and wired probe, which required users to operate them with both hands. Realising there was an opportunity to make life easier, we created a single-hand unit.
Its ergonomic, user-friendly design meant it was quickly adopted by home cooking enthusiasts alongside professionals.
1990s - International partnership
ThermoWorks became ETI's exclusive North American partner, helping bring Thermapen to professional kitchens and home cooks across the United States and Canada.
Over the years, ThermoWorks has worked closely with ETI to develop new Thermapen models, contributing valuable engineering expertise, feedback and customer insights that have shaped each design.
2010s - Thermapen won awards
In 2012, 2014 and 2017, ETI was awarded the Queen’s Award for International Trade, and in 2018 the Queen’s Award for Innovation.
Alongside prestigious awards, Thermapen also began to feature on some of the world’s most popular cooking TV shows, publications, and has gained attention on the social media channels of many cooking influencers.
2009 — Launch of the Thermapen Classic
Over time, Thermapen designs were refined to become sleeker, faster, and more user-friendly. In 2009, we introduced the Thermapen Classic, our essential model that is still a core part of our thermometer collection today.
2021 — Launch of the Thermapen ONE
In 2021, Thermapen outperformed other thermometers on the market by introducing the Thermapen ONE, which reads in only one second.
As always, the advanced design was based on customer feedback, market research, and a commitment to using the latest technological advancements.
Thermapen future
More than 30 years after the original Thermapen was launched, ETI continues to design and manufacture every Thermapen in Worthing, West Sussex. That commitment to British engineering continues with the upcoming Thermapen NANO, arriving in autumn 2026.
